I was just looking through the site and I’ve hit 20 total posts!
I started this blog back in July, partly as a way of messing around with blot.im (you can find my early thoughts on that decision here), but also because I’ve wanted a site of my own for a very long time now and couldn’t quite manage to build the posting habit. I’ve run blogs on Squarespace, posted a few times on Tumblr, but this has been the first time I’ve actually been excited to post on a regular basis.
I think part of that’s down to Blot as a platform. The ability to pop open Obsidian and immediately start writing has lowered the barrier to publishing something new tremendously, and the fact that it’s all just .md
files at the core is oddly comforting. It’s all just text.
The success of my ADACA walkthroughs was also a huge boost early on. I’ve fiddled around on the margins of the SEO world for a while now but those posts were and have continued to be major validations of my beliefs about publishing successful content online. Almost since the first post went live they’ve been in the top 5 results on Google and they’ve continued to bring in consistent traffic in the months since.
Google Search Console Rankings
There’s no real output from those rankings, but it definitely felt good to get those kinds of results off of a project I started on a whim (and have since paused) just because I liked the game. It turns out I made some good early decisions in terms of keywords and my use of anchor-linked Tables-of-Contents throughout.
More recently I’ve made the conscious decision not to specialize. Most guides to writing blogs emphasize the importance of narrowing your focus, zeroing in on a specific subject and sticking to it. I have absolutely not done that. Part of that’s because I’m not really trying to do anything here commercially. But part of it’s because this is my personal blog. And I’m interested in a lot of different stuff! This blog is a reflection of that and I intend for it to stay that way.
As the world has felt more overwhelming I’ve focused more and more of my reading time on places like this one on the internet - you can find many of them on my links page. This blog is my attempt to build more of what I’d like to see online.
More to come!
